National Coalition Leader Calls for Binding Congressional Action on Iraq
January 2007

In response to a non-binding Senate resolution against President Bush's call for troop escalation, Tom Andrews, the National Director of WWW, called on Senate Democrats to take binding action to stop the president's escalation of the Iraq war and begin the redeployment of US troops out of Iraq.

In an open letter, Andrews said: "We are concerned that a non-binding resolution on Iraq is being pursued in the Senate without clear linkage to binding Congressional action that would reverse the president's course in Iraq. The Congress has an obligation to respect and to implement the will of the American people."

America Says NO!
January 2007

Defying a mandate by the American people, President Bush has announced that he will escalate the war in Iraq by sending 21,500 additional US troops.

On January 11, Americans across the country delivered an immediate and direct response of NO! to the President's call for escalation. More than 1,000 rallies took place in communities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

"Americans by the thousands will be standing up until the Bush Administration stands down its failed and catastrophic policy in Iraq," said WWW National Director Tom Andrews.

The Win Without War coalition partnered with United for Peace and Justice and other key allies in organizing the nationwide events. WWW member TrueMajority organized the campaign's central website, www.americasaysno.org, where participants registered their events and posted their reports and pictures.

These events launched a series of actions, including a March on Washington, Congressional Lobby Day, and In-District Lobby Visits to send a clear message to President Bush and the new Congress.

Secure America Tour 2006
Fall 2006

Win Without War partnered with Fourth Freedom Forum in organizing their Secure America Tour, a series of speaking events that brought credentialed foreign policy experts to local communities across the country and created a dialogue on today's most important foreign policy issues. The series included 15 events with local World Affairs Councils along with additional community events in partnership with the WWW coalition members.

Gen. Robert Gard Jr. began the tour with two speaking events in Milwaukee. On October 30, the WWW coalition partered with the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee in hosting Gen. Gard for an event dedicated to the war in Iraq. The three-star general also addressed the Institute of World Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on "US Security and the Middle East: Have we lost our way?". On November 7, Milwaukee voters faced a ballot referendum asking whether the US should engage in an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and 72% voted for "rapid withdrawal."

On November 2, Dr. Trita Parsi addressed the Columbus Council on World Affairs on "Iran Rising: US Options in the Changing Middle East." Dr. Parsi was also a part of a community event on the campus of OSU with David Cortright of Fourth Freedom Forum to further discuss US-Iran policy and the recent interfaith "Words, Not War" statement signed by national religious leaders.

Homeland Insecurity: Maine Homeland Security Task Force

Got homeland security? We don't think so either. The gulf between the Bush administration's rhetoric about keeping America secure and the reality of a nation weakened by a disastrous foreign policy and the hollowing out of our government's capacity to meet even its basic responsibilities - starting with keeping Americans safe - is wider than the Gulf of Mexico!

Win Without War decided it was time to start a national debate about homeland security. We proposed that state governments take matters into their own hands beginning with a public evaluation of how federal policies, especially the Iraq war and the deployment of National Guard and Reserve forces overseas - impacts the safety of their citizens.

Maine Senate President Beth Edmonds answered the call by introducing state legislation last year to create a task force of citizens and legislators to examine these basic questions. The legislation became law and Governor John Baldacci officially announced the Task Force to Study Maine's Homeland Security Needs in September 2005.

Win Without War is encouraging other states to follow in Maine's lead.

Campaign for an Open Debate on Iraq: End the Congressional Rubberstamping
June 2006

On Wednesday, April 5, a group of Republican Members of Congress joined Democratic Members in signing House Resolution 543 - a discharge petition that, with 218 signatories, would stop business-as-usual in the House and allow for consideration and votes on all alternatives to the Bush policy in Iraq.

Their announcement unleashed a national campaign by Win Without War that resulted in hundreds of thousands of citizens contacting their Members of Congress demanding to know where they stood on an open and honest debate on Iraq.

In response to immense public pressure, the House leadership answered the demand with a limited "debate" on a resolution declaring that the US will "prevail in the Global War on Terror."
